چکیده

Dr. Derrick Tilton Vail first proposed the notion of a specialty medical board in 1908 in his presidential address to the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology. At that time, no way had been established for the public to confirm that a physician who claimed to be a specialist was qualified in that specialty. Dr. Vail’s suggestion was to establish a body that would define specialty qualifications, supervise examinations that test the preparation of specialists, and issue credentials to assure the public of that individual’s qualifications.1
